Weight Loss Injections (Mounjaro®) – NHS Information

We are receiving a high number of enquiries about NHS weight loss injections such as Mounjaro® (tirzepatide). Although these medicines have been approved for use on the NHS, they are not currently available to everyone who would like them. NHS England is introducing access in stages, with treatment initially being offered to people with the greatest clinical need.

Who can have Mounjaro on the NHS? To be considered for NHS treatment, patients must meet strict national eligibility criteria. During the current rollout, this generally means people who have:

  • A BMI of 40 or above (or a lower threshold for some ethnic groups), and Four or more of the following conditions:
  • Type 2 diabetes High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular (heart) disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • High cholesterol or abnormal blood fats Treatment is provided alongside support with healthy eating, physical activity and behaviour change.

Can my GP prescribe Mounjaro?

Only patients who meet the current NHS eligibility criteria can be prescribed Mounjaro through their GP as part of the phased NHS rollout. If you do not meet these criteria, we are unfortunately unable to prescribe this medication on the NHS, even if you are willing to pay for it privately.

What if I don’t qualify?

If you are concerned about your weight, we are here to help. Your GP or another member of the practice team can discuss the most appropriate options for you, which may include:

  • Healthy lifestyle advice Referral to local NHS weight management services (where appropriate)
  • Support to manage medical conditions that may affect your weight
